Scotswood Rise dominates the river Tyne. With the demise of traditional industries the area fell into disrepair. There had been many attempts at regeneration over the years but the area was given a significant boost by the formation of the NTWDC a public/private partnership of Newcastle City Council and Keepmoat Homes. A £265m project was enabled to deliver 1800 mixed tenure homes on the steeply sloping 148 acre site.

Identifying Retaining Wall Needs

Retain was approached in late 2018 by HMH Civils Ltd., the Groundworks and specialist Civil Engineering Contractor. The consultant engineers employed by NTWDC, 3 E Engineering had carried out extensive ground investigations and conceptual designs which envisaged Crib Retaining Walls.

At an early stage Retain identified the need for a specialist Geotechnical consultant and Remedy Geotechnics were instructed. Their main areas of involvement were to do with global stability checks which required the provision of boreholes and pull-out calculations on the Huesker geogrid employed.

The final proposal from Retain considered:

  • The best retaining wall system for the location: Allan Block had significant advantages in (a) lower bearing pressure and (b) less land required for the high walls as compared to other systems
  • Aesthetics: The cut block facing and colour were chosen to match the architecture of the houses to be built on site
  • Cost: The proposed system was significantly cheaper with the added benefit of increased garden size

How Retain Contributed

Retain managed the iterative process amongst the numerous parties. The installed walling reached a height of 8 metres and a face area of


  • 30 years experience: identified the need for a specialist Geotechnical Consultant at an early stage
  • “Full Cycle involvement”: Guaranteed the iteration of the various parties progressed smoothly to the appearance on site
  • Professionally Indemnified Design: meant the provision of collateral warranties
  • Accurate estimating: ensured NTWDC, Keepmoat Homes and HMH Civils had no nasty surprises on this impressive project
