Identifying Retaining Wall Needs

When we were approached in June 2023, Barratt Homes had already commissioned a formal design. Normally we have full cycle involvement but, on this occasion, we were invited to tender by M & J Evans, the groundworker.

The best system for the location: Tobermore’s modular block system, Secura Grand had been specified in the formal design by the external designer.
Aesthetics: This wall complemented the luxury homes and the previous phases on the site.
Cost: Costs were tight on the job and M & J Evans were being held to prices from a few years ago. Retain Solutions Ltd was able to work collaboratively with Huesker, the geogrid supplier, and Tobermore to produce a cost-effective solution.

How Retain Contributed

There was a short lead in time on this project. Using our industry connections, we were able to get on site quickly making sure we had enough materials to meet the start date of 6th September. The remainder of the materials were then supplied in good time and the walls were substantially complete by 27th October.

Prior to our involvement Barratt Homes had employed GRM Development Solutions Ltd. to provide a 3rd party inspection of the walls. Their principal geotechnical engineer visited the site and confirmed that the wall, geogrid, compacted stone layers, grid lengths, drainage pipes and sleeves for the wall were all built in accordance with the design.

Full Cycle involvement: Unusually we built this wall to design a produced by others. However, our in-house design capability meant we were able to provide all the information required by GRM Development Solutions in a timely fashion.
Accurate estimating: meant that a timely supply of materials was assured.
