Barratt Homes initially intended to use brick retaining walls. A shortage of available bricklayers necessitated a search for an alternative retaining wall solution. Our contracts manager, Matthew Ross met the technical team from Barratts on site and successfully persuaded the team that a modular block wall was ideal for the location.
The best system for the location: Modular Block suited the particular ground conditions
Aesthetics: Heather block was picked to suit the semi-rural location
Cost: Significant savings were obtained with the added advantage that bricklayers were freed up to build houses.
Ruddlesden Geotechnical had prepared reports in 2015 and 2021. Peat was identified at several locations. Retain prepared a full design appraisal and then liaised with Barratts’ technical team and Ruddlesden Geotechnical to properly prepare the foundations for the wall. The compacted stone layers were tested by Ruddlesden before the wall was constructed.
Retain’s solution provided significant savings in time and money. The savings were so beneficial that a partially completed brick wall was finished with our modular block. Barratt’s were also able to free bricklayers from the previously proposed walls to concentrate on building houses.
Throughout our involvement, design and layout changes were quickly accommodated.
