Modular Block Retaining Walls
Modular Block Retaining Walls are a mortarless dry stacking system. We specialise in Retaining Walls that require Civil Engineering design approval. The system can be specified either with Geogrid reinforcement or as a Gravity wall with a lean mix concrete backfill. The concrete units, manufactured in Northern Ireland, come in a variety of colours to suit the aesthetics of the location. Walls up to 8m high can be designed with Geogrid reinforcement.
The Gravity walls with a no-fines concrete backfill are usually restricted to 4 metres in height. The resultant wall can be fitted into a tighter space with less excavation. On occasion the use of structural concrete can increase the height.
Applications of Modular Block Walls
- Housing developments requiring co-ordination of the paving and block colours
- Locations requiring retaining heights up to 8 metres (Geogrid)
- Locations where space is tight (Gravity with no-fines)
- Roads & Bridges requiring Highways approval and BBA certification
Design & Manufacture of Modular block Retaining walls
The design process begins with a preliminary assessment of the height, loading and available soils analysis. the appropriate colour is selected from a range of samples. The next stage involves a detailed design carried out by our chartered engineers with full professional indemnity insurance.
A more detailed analysis of the ground conditions and the surcharge loading is carried out. Our 30 years experience often leads to value engineering options. Working drawings are then prepared with accurate quantities and a Contract Price.
The systems we employ are manufactured in Northern Ireland. When designed and constructed in accordance with the BBA (Roads & Bridges) accreditation along with the appropriate geogrid will have an expected lifespan of at least 120 years. The blocks are manufactured in accordance with BS 8500-1 utilising high compressive pressure and cured in kilns with controlled amounts of heat and steam.
Installation of Modular block Retaining walls
Our "Full Cycle Involvement" ensures that the correct quantities are delivered to site. The experienced installers can confidently provide curves and corners. Terraces and steps are regularly included. Our Full Cycle Involvement aims to ensure Cost Certainty from start to finish, however design changes, if required are quick and seamless.
